Cambridge IGCSE English comes as two syllabuses: First Language English (0500), for learners whose first language is English, and English as a Second Language (0510 or 0511), for learners who study through English as an additional language. Edunest tutors teach both over live video, one-to-one, beginning with the syllabus your child's school has entered.
The two syllabuses test different things. First Language English rewards close reading of how writers work; the Second Language syllabus rewards clear, practical English.
What we cover
These skills come from Cambridge's syllabuses for exams in 2027 to 2029. Each module is tagged with its syllabus, since the two courses share little beyond the language.
Learners answer on explicit and implied meaning across three texts, then explain how a writer's word choices shape the reader's response. Retelling the passage without naming an effect loses marks.

The summary asks for selected points from one text in no more than 120 words. Copied phrases and a runaway word count cost marks the learner's reading had already earned.

Learners turn the arguments in one or two texts into a speech, letter, article or report of about 250-350 words. The strongest answers weigh the texts, question them and build on them.

From four titles, two descriptive and two narrative, the learner writes about 350-450 words on one. A plan for the shape of the piece keeps the story controlled under time.

Four exercises on articles, blogs and websites use short answers, matching, note completion and multiple choice. The usual trap is spotting a familiar word and missing the writer's real opinion.

Two tasks of 120-160 words: an informal email, then a more formal article, report, essay or review. Content and language earn separate marks, so every prompt needs covering in the right tone.

Five exercises and 40 multiple-choice questions on messages, talks and an interview, each heard twice. Learners often pick an option because its words were spoken, though the speaker later rejected it.

First Language candidates may give a talk and hold a conversation; Second Language candidates take an interview, a short talk and a discussion. Both reward developed answers and clear pronunciation.

Each learner is entered for one syllabus, so the tutor starts with its modules and borrows from the other only where a skill carries across.
How lessons run
English grows through steady reading, writing and talk, so lessons keep a regular rhythm through both years of the course.
The tutor asks for a recent essay, a marked test and the syllabus code. Your child then reads a short passage and writes a paragraph live, so the tutor sees how they plan, choose words and check.
For 0500 the plan follows Paper 1 and either Paper 2 or the coursework portfolio. For 0510 or 0511 it balances all four skills. Parents receive it as a short written note.
Each lesson takes one skill, such as choosing summary points or moving into a formal register. The tutor models it on a fresh text, and your child applies it at once on a shared screen.
In the months before June or November, lessons turn to timed questions in the format of Cambridge's specimen papers, marked against the syllabus criteria, with one target for the next lesson.
Lessons can sit on Sunday-to-Thursday school evenings or on a Friday or Saturday, with every time set in Qatar time (UTC+3). During Ramadan the schedule shifts in line with that year's official announcement.
Lessons run on Google Meet, Zoom or Microsoft Teams, and parents may sit in whenever they wish.
The exam
Cambridge International Education sets both syllabuses. The figures below apply to exams in 2027, 2028 and 2029; a learner sitting in November 2026 still follows the 2024-2026 syllabus.

For these syllabuses, Cambridge gives schools in Qatar two sittings a year, in June and in November. Speaking tests and coursework follow Cambridge deadlines, and the school confirms each date.
Grades run from A* (highest) to G, or from 9 to 1 on the 9-1 codes. Endorsed speaking is reported separately, from 1 (high) to 5 (low).
